Treating chronic airway narrowing and preventing flare-ups.
COPD is a lasting condition involving narrowed airways and sometimes damage to the air sacs in the lungs. Smoking is a major risk factor, but not the only one. Treatment reflects symptoms, lung function and previous flare-ups.
Persistent cough, phlegm and breathlessness during activity are common and often develop gradually. Suddenly worse breathlessness, changed sputum or fever can indicate a flare-up. Call 112 for severe breathlessness.
Diagnosis particularly relies on lung function testing. We assess symptoms, exercise tolerance, smoking and associated conditions. Further respiratory investigations are arranged when needed. Regular reviews help adapt treatment.
Stopping smoking, suitable activity and correct inhaler use are central. We discuss vaccinations, an action plan for flare-ups and, where appropriate, rehabilitation or additional measures. A disease management programme can structure care for eligible patients.
We discuss which changes to watch for in everyday life and when another check-up would be useful. Your questions, personal goals and how well you tolerate treatment inform further decisions. Where needed, we coordinate with your treating specialists.
Bring your health insurance card, recent medical letters, existing test results and a medication list. Note any changes in your symptoms and your main questions. Do not change existing treatment yourself; we will discuss together whether adjustments are needed.
