Pet allergy

Investigating symptoms associated with animal contact.

Understanding the condition

What is commonly called an animal hair allergy usually targets proteins from skin flakes, saliva or other animal material. These enter the environment through hair and dust, so symptoms may occur even when the animal is no longer in the room.

Common symptoms

Sneezing, nasal symptoms, itchy eyes or skin reactions are typical. Cough and breathlessness can also occur. It matters whether symptoms relate to particular animals or places and how quickly they improve.

Diagnosis and assessment

We discuss contact and symptom progression. Targeted allergy tests can support the suspicion but must be interpreted alongside symptoms. Signs suggesting asthma require corresponding assessment.

Treatment and ongoing care

We discuss reducing allergen exposure and suitable symptom treatment. Measures depend on severity and daily circumstances. Persistent symptoms or airway involvement may require allergy or respiratory specialist assessment.

Monitoring your progress together

We discuss which changes to watch for in everyday life and when another check-up would be useful. Your questions, personal goals and how well you tolerate treatment inform further decisions. Where needed, we coordinate with your treating specialists.

Your appointment at the practice

Bring your health insurance card, recent medical letters, existing test results and a medication list. Note any changes in your symptoms and your main questions. Do not change existing treatment yourself; we will discuss together whether adjustments are needed.
