Irritable bowel syndrome

Understanding persistent bowel symptoms and relieving them individually.

Understanding the condition

Irritable bowel syndrome can cause abdominal pain and altered bowel habits. Bowel function and communication between the gut and nervous system interact. Symptoms are real and should not simply be dismissed as imagined.

Common symptoms

Bloating, diarrhoea, constipation or alternating between them can occur. Progression, diet and daily impact matter. Blood in stools, unintended weight loss, fever or new symptoms require targeted consideration of other causes.

Diagnosis and assessment

We assess symptoms and select investigations according to your situation. Blood tests, stool tests or further gastroenterological investigations may help depending on findings. A food and symptom diary can aid assessment; not every food automatically needs a test.

Treatment and ongoing care

Treatment follows the main symptoms. Suitable dietary changes, activity, medicines and stress-management approaches may help. Restrictive diets should receive professional support. Together, we review which measures help and are sustainable.

Monitoring your progress together

We discuss which changes to watch for in everyday life and when another check-up would be useful. Your questions, personal goals and how well you tolerate treatment inform further decisions. Where needed, we coordinate with your treating specialists.

Your appointment at the practice

Bring your health insurance card, recent medical letters, existing test results and a medication list. Note any changes in your symptoms and your main questions. Do not change existing treatment yourself; we will discuss together whether adjustments are needed.
