Using chronic cough as a reason for a targeted assessment.
Cough in people who smoke should not be dismissed as unavoidable. It can indicate airway irritation or chronic bronchitis. COPD and other illnesses also need consideration when symptoms suggest them.
Cough with phlegm, breathlessness or declining exercise capacity are important clues. Blood in sputum, pain, unintended weight loss or a changed cough pattern need prompt assessment.
We discuss progression, tobacco use and other exposures. Examination and, where needed, lung function testing aid assessment. Additional investigations or respiratory specialist review depend on the findings.
Stopping smoking is particularly effective for protecting the airways. We advise on support including behavioural programmes, medicines where appropriate or a suitable digital application. A confirmed lung condition is also managed according to its specific treatment plan.
We discuss which changes to watch for in everyday life and when another check-up would be useful. Your questions, personal goals and how well you tolerate treatment inform further decisions. Where needed, we coordinate with your treating specialists.
Bring your health insurance card, recent medical letters, existing test results and a medication list. Note any changes in your symptoms and your main questions. Do not change existing treatment yourself; we will discuss together whether adjustments are needed.
