Polio vaccination

Reviewing complete immunisation and particular travel risks.

Why protection matters

Polioviruses can damage the nervous system and cause paralysis. Transmission mainly occurs through contaminated hands, water or food. Although rare in Germany, complete vaccination remains important because of risks worldwide.

Who may benefit

Primary vaccination normally begins in childhood. Missing doses and necessary boosters are assessed from the vaccination record. Travel to certain countries or particular occupational risks may involve additional recommendations and documentation requirements.

Planning and particular considerations

An inactivated vaccine is used, often combined with other vaccinations. We make a catch-up plan for gaps. Before travel, current country advice and any booster timing are checked. A complete documented record also helps assess later trips.

Information and observation

Before vaccination, we discuss underlying conditions, medicines, allergies and previous vaccine reactions. You receive information on benefits and possible side effects. A short observation period follows. Pain or redness at the injection site and temporary general symptoms may occur; more severe or lasting symptoms should receive medical assessment.

Costs and reimbursement

Medically recommended vaccinations may be covered by statutory insurance under the applicable vaccination directive. The specific indication and your insurance cover determine eligibility. Occupational vaccination may be the responsibility of occupational health services. We discuss scope and any charges in advance.

Your appointment at the practice

Bring your vaccination record and an up-to-date medication list. Mention planned travel, pregnancy or immunosuppressive treatment. The vaccination series and boosters depend on the vaccine and current recommendations.
