Crohn's disease

Supporting inflammatory bowel symptoms and ongoing care.

Understanding the condition

Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory condition that can affect different parts of the digestive tract. The small and large bowel are commonly involved. Symptoms may occur in flare-ups and the disease can affect areas outside the bowel too.

Common symptoms

Abdominal pain, persistent diarrhoea, weight loss and exhaustion may be clues. Some people also experience symptoms around the anus or nutrient deficiencies. Severe pain, fever and marked deterioration need prompt assessment.

Diagnosis and assessment

Assessment combines discussion, examination, blood and stool tests with gastroenterological investigations. Endoscopy and, where needed, imaging can assess inflammation. We use existing findings and coordinate necessary specialist care.

Treatment and ongoing care

The aim is to control inflammation and maintain quality of life. Gastroenterological treatment is adapted to the course and areas affected. We support medication monitoring, possible deficiencies and associated conditions. Dietary advice and stopping smoking may be important additional topics.

Monitoring your progress together

We discuss which changes to watch for in everyday life and when another check-up would be useful. Your questions, personal goals and how well you tolerate treatment inform further decisions. Where needed, we coordinate with your treating specialists.

Your appointment at the practice

Bring your health insurance card, recent medical letters, existing test results and a medication list. Note any changes in your symptoms and your main questions. Do not change existing treatment yourself; we will discuss together whether adjustments are needed.
