Meningococcal vaccination

Discussing protection against certain serious bacterial infections.

Why protection matters

Meningococci can cause meningitis or blood poisoning, and illness can quickly become severe. There are different bacterial groups; one vaccine does not automatically cover all meningococci.

Who may benefit

Recommendations depend on age, vaccine and risk. Alongside childhood and adolescent vaccination, particular medical conditions, contacts or travel may justify protection. Some pilgrimages have specific proof-of-vaccination requirements.

Planning and particular considerations

We assess whether protection against group B or groups A, C, W and Y is relevant. Doses, intervals and boosters depend on the product and risk. Early travel planning helps meet documentation and timing requirements.

Information and observation

Before vaccination, we discuss underlying conditions, medicines, allergies and previous vaccine reactions. You receive information on benefits and possible side effects. A short observation period follows. Pain or redness at the injection site and temporary general symptoms may occur; more severe or lasting symptoms should receive medical assessment.

Costs and reimbursement

Medically recommended vaccinations may be covered by statutory insurance under the applicable vaccination directive. The specific indication and your insurance cover determine eligibility. Occupational vaccination may be the responsibility of occupational health services. We discuss scope and any charges in advance.

Your appointment at the practice

Bring your vaccination record and an up-to-date medication list. Mention planned travel, pregnancy or immunosuppressive treatment. The vaccination series and boosters depend on the vaccine and current recommendations.
