Distinguishing recurrent headaches and treating them appropriately.
Headaches have different causes. Tension-type headache and migraine are common; another illness is less often responsible. Appropriate treatment requires distinguishing the pattern, frequency and associated signs.
The location, duration, intensity and triggers matter. Nausea, light sensitivity or symptoms during movement can suggest migraine. Frequent painkiller use can itself contribute to persistent headaches.
We discuss the course and examine you. A headache diary recording medication days helps assessment. Further tests or neurology assessment are arranged for specific indications, particularly a new or clearly changed pattern.
Depending on the cause, we discuss acute treatment, prevention and safe medication use. Regular sleep, activity and relaxation can help. A sudden exceptionally severe headache, new weakness or speech problems require immediate help via 112.
We discuss which changes to watch for in everyday life and when another check-up would be useful. Your questions, personal goals and how well you tolerate treatment inform further decisions. Where needed, we coordinate with your treating specialists.
Bring your health insurance card, recent medical letters, existing test results and a medication list. Note any changes in your symptoms and your main questions. Do not change existing treatment yourself; we will discuss together whether adjustments are needed.
