Seek immediate medical help after possible high-risk HIV exposure. Assessment is time-critical.
HIV post-exposure prophylaxis, or PEP, is a limited course of medication after certain possible HIV exposures. It aims to prevent infection. Its suitability depends on the contact and actual risk and requires rapid medical assessment.
Treatment should begin as soon as possible, ideally within a few hours. Do not wait for a routine appointment or a reply through a contact form. Outside practice hours, contact an appropriate emergency department or specialist HIV service. Prompt advice remains important even if more time has passed.
Medical care includes risk assessment, relevant tests and selecting medication. PEP is usually taken for several weeks. Follow-up checks assess tolerability and infection status. Other sexually transmitted infections and hepatitis B vaccination may also be considered.
We explain findings clearly and discuss measures suited to your circumstances. If further tests or specialist input are needed, we help plan them. Please bring existing reports and an up-to-date list of medication and supplements.
