Hepatitis A vaccination

Protection against travel-related liver inflammation.

Why protection matters

Hepatitis A is a viral liver infection often spread through contaminated water or food. It can cause tiredness, nausea and jaundice. Hygiene alone may not sufficiently prevent travel-related risk.

Who may benefit

Vaccination may be useful for travel to regions with higher prevalence. Certain occupational or health circumstances can also justify a recommendation. Destination, conditions during travel and existing liver disease inform advice.

Planning and particular considerations

We review previous doses and select a suitable schedule. A later additional dose is usually planned for longer-term protection. Combined hepatitis A and B vaccines are available if both are needed. The approach depends on the product and individual history.

Information and observation

Before vaccination, we discuss underlying conditions, medicines, allergies and previous vaccine reactions. You receive information on benefits and possible side effects. A short observation period follows. Pain or redness at the injection site and temporary general symptoms may occur; more severe or lasting symptoms should receive medical assessment.

Costs and reimbursement

Reimbursement for travel vaccinations depends on factors including the purpose of travel and your insurance. Many statutory insurers offer additional benefits, but this is not a general guarantee of coverage. We clarify the planned services and possible charges in advance. Please check coverage with your insurer in good time.

Your appointment at the practice

Bring your vaccination record and an up-to-date medication list. Mention planned travel, pregnancy or immunosuppressive treatment. The vaccination series and boosters depend on the vaccine and current recommendations.
