Diphtheria vaccination

Reviewing primary protection and necessary boosters.

Why protection matters

Diphtheria is a bacterial illness affecting the airways or skin. A toxin produced by the bacteria can cause severe damage. Vaccination protects against this toxin; reliable protection requires a complete vaccination series and appropriate boosters.

Who may benefit

Protection usually begins in childhood and remains relevant for adults. Missing vaccinations can be caught up. We review your record and consider particular risks such as travel or possible contact with infected people.

Planning and particular considerations

Adults usually receive boosters every ten years, often combined with tetanus and, where appropriate, pertussis or polio. An individual catch-up plan is made for uncertain records. A single dose does not always replace a missing primary vaccination series.

Information and observation

Before vaccination, we discuss underlying conditions, medicines, allergies and previous vaccine reactions. You receive information on benefits and possible side effects. A short observation period follows. Pain or redness at the injection site and temporary general symptoms may occur; more severe or lasting symptoms should receive medical assessment.

Costs and reimbursement

Medically recommended vaccinations may be covered by statutory insurance under the applicable vaccination directive. The specific indication and your insurance cover determine eligibility. Occupational vaccination may be the responsibility of occupational health services. We discuss scope and any charges in advance.

Your appointment at the practice

Bring your vaccination record and an up-to-date medication list. Mention planned travel, pregnancy or immunosuppressive treatment. The vaccination series and boosters depend on the vaccine and current recommendations.
