COVID-19 PCR test

Advice on testing for a current SARS-CoV-2 infection.

What it involves

A PCR test checks a swab sample for genetic material from the coronavirus. Where there is a medical reason to test, it can help identify a current infection. The decision depends on symptoms, health risks and how the result would affect care. Testing without symptoms is not automatically covered by statutory health insurance.

When is testing useful?

Cough, fever, a sore throat and marked exhaustion may occur with COVID-19, but can have other causes. Early medical advice is especially important for people at increased risk of severe illness. We assess individually which tests and, if needed, treatment are appropriate.

How the test works

A sample is taken from the nose or throat using the appropriate procedure and examined in a laboratory. Timing and sample quality affect the result. A negative result does not reliably rule out infection in every situation. The test does not reliably indicate individual immunity or identify infections that occurred a long time ago.

Results and next steps

We interpret the result alongside your symptoms. If it is positive, we discuss how to protect vulnerable contacts and the next treatment steps. Please telephone before visiting if you have symptoms of an infection. Ask when booking about availability, sampling, delivery of results and any charges; a fixed turnaround time cannot be guaranteed.

Your appointment at the practice

Please describe your current symptoms when arranging an appointment. Bring your health insurance card, existing medical reports and an up-to-date medication list. Together, we will decide which next steps are appropriate for your situation.
