Ulcerative colitis

Coordinated support for inflammatory bowel disease.

Understanding the condition

Ulcerative colitis causes inflammation of the lining of the large bowel. It often follows a pattern of flare-ups and quieter periods. Specialist-coordinated treatment aims to relieve symptoms and control inflammation.

Common symptoms

Bloody diarrhoea, urgency and abdominal pain are typical. Exhaustion or anaemia can also develop. Frequent bloody stools, fever, circulation problems or severe pain require prompt medical assessment.

Diagnosis and assessment

Diagnosis and monitoring may require blood and stool tests and colonoscopy with tissue samples. Gastroenterology services determine the necessary investigations. We also monitor other conditions, nutritional health and medication tolerance.

Treatment and ongoing care

Treatment reflects the extent and activity of inflammation. Various anti-inflammatory or immune-targeting medicines may be used. We support required checks and discuss vaccinations and warning signs during treatment. Prescribed treatment should not be stopped independently even when symptoms are mild.

Monitoring your progress together

We discuss which changes to watch for in everyday life and when another check-up would be useful. Your questions, personal goals and how well you tolerate treatment inform further decisions. Where needed, we coordinate with your treating specialists.

Your appointment at the practice

Bring your health insurance card, recent medical letters, existing test results and a medication list. Note any changes in your symptoms and your main questions. Do not change existing treatment yourself; we will discuss together whether adjustments are needed.
