Investigating persistent cough and possible airway damage.
Chronic bronchitis describes lasting cough with phlegm. Tobacco smoke and other inhaled irritants can place lasting strain on the airways. Not all chronic cough is bronchitis; asthma, reflux or medicines can also contribute.
Recurrent cough and mucus production are typical. Breathlessness may require assessment for COPD. Blood in sputum, fever, unintended weight loss or a clear change in symptoms need prompt investigation.
We discuss smoking, occupational exposure, progression and accompanying symptoms. Examination and, where appropriate, lung function measurement help assessment. Further tests are selected to identify other causes or complications.
Avoiding harmful irritants and support to stop smoking where needed are important. Further treatment follows the findings; inhaled medicines are not required for every cough. We also discuss relevant vaccinations and managing respiratory infections.
We discuss which changes to watch for in everyday life and when another check-up would be useful. Your questions, personal goals and how well you tolerate treatment inform further decisions. Where needed, we coordinate with your treating specialists.
Bring your health insurance card, recent medical letters, existing test results and a medication list. Note any changes in your symptoms and your main questions. Do not change existing treatment yourself; we will discuss together whether adjustments are needed.
