High blood pressure

Measuring blood pressure reliably and managing it over time.

Understanding the condition

Persistently high blood pressure can put strain on the heart, blood vessels and kidneys. It often causes no symptoms for a long time. Diagnosis relies on repeated, correctly performed measurements and considers whether readings were taken at the practice or elsewhere.

Common symptoms

Headache, palpitations or dizziness can occur but are not specific. High blood pressure is often found during routine checks. Very high readings together with chest pain, breathlessness or neurological symptoms require immediate medical assessment.

Diagnosis and assessment

We review your blood pressure, measurement conditions and, if needed, a 24-hour recording. Selected blood and urine tests can assess kidney function and other risks. Medicines, sleep problems and possible underlying conditions are also considered.

Treatment and ongoing care

Treatment combines lifestyle changes with medication when required. Targets and medicines depend on factors including age, other conditions and tolerability. A home blood pressure record helps with follow-up. Please do not adjust doses yourself based on isolated readings.

Monitoring your progress together

We discuss which changes to watch for in everyday life and when another check-up would be useful. Your questions, personal goals and how well you tolerate treatment inform further decisions. Where needed, we coordinate with your treating specialists.

Your appointment at the practice

Bring your health insurance card, recent medical letters, existing test results and a medication list. Note any changes in your symptoms and your main questions. Do not change existing treatment yourself; we will discuss together whether adjustments are needed.
