Bloating

Assessing recurrent gas and abdominal symptoms.

Understanding the condition

Gas forms naturally during digestion. Bloating can nevertheless become troublesome or occur with pain and changes in bowel habits. Diet, constipation, intolerances or irritable bowel syndrome may contribute; a particular food is not always the cause.

Common symptoms

Fullness, abdominal distension and increased passing of wind are common. We consider whether symptoms are new, persist or occur with diarrhoea. Blood in stools, weight loss or fever require further assessment.

Diagnosis and assessment

We discuss meals, duration, bowel habits and medicines and examine your abdomen. A brief diary may reveal associations. Further tests, such as for a particular intolerance, are selected for relevant questions rather than performed routinely.

Treatment and ongoing care

Treatment may include targeted dietary changes or management of constipation or other causes. Very restrictive exclusion diets are unhelpful without advice. We discuss practical changes and check whether they actually improve symptoms.

Monitoring your progress together

We discuss which changes to watch for in everyday life and when another check-up would be useful. Your questions, personal goals and how well you tolerate treatment inform further decisions. Where needed, we coordinate with your treating specialists.

Your appointment at the practice

Bring your health insurance card, recent medical letters, existing test results and a medication list. Note any changes in your symptoms and your main questions. Do not change existing treatment yourself; we will discuss together whether adjustments are needed.
