Food allergy

Distinguishing allergies from other food intolerances.

Understanding the condition

Food allergy involves an immune reaction to components of a food. Not every digestive symptom after eating is an allergy. Careful diagnosis avoids unnecessary and potentially unbalanced dietary restrictions.

Common symptoms

Possible reactions include an itchy mouth, rash, swelling or gastrointestinal symptoms. Breathlessness and circulation problems can indicate a severe allergic reaction. Call 112 in such an emergency and use any prescribed emergency kit according to your agreed plan.

Diagnosis and assessment

We assess the food, timing, amount and type of reaction. Targeted skin or blood tests and specialist investigations where needed help diagnosis. Challenge tests require suitable medical supervision and must not be attempted independently.

Treatment and ongoing care

Treatment includes specifically avoiding confirmed triggers and dietary advice where needed. If severe reactions are a risk, emergency medicines and their safe use are discussed. We support specialist follow-up; broad food test packages do not replace a careful history.

Monitoring your progress together

We discuss which changes to watch for in everyday life and when another check-up would be useful. Your questions, personal goals and how well you tolerate treatment inform further decisions. Where needed, we coordinate with your treating specialists.

Your appointment at the practice

Bring your health insurance card, recent medical letters, existing test results and a medication list. Note any changes in your symptoms and your main questions. Do not change existing treatment yourself; we will discuss together whether adjustments are needed.
