HIV post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP)

Seek immediate medical help after possible high-risk HIV exposure. Assessment is time-critical.

After possible HIV exposure

HIV post-exposure prophylaxis, or PEP, is a limited course of medication after certain possible HIV exposures. It aims to prevent infection. Its suitability depends on the contact and actual risk and requires rapid medical assessment.

Seek help immediately

Treatment should begin as soon as possible, ideally within a few hours. Do not wait for a routine appointment or a reply through a contact form. Outside practice hours, contact an appropriate emergency department or specialist HIV service. Prompt advice remains important even if more time has passed.

Assessment and follow-up

Medical care includes risk assessment, relevant tests and selecting medication. PEP is usually taken for several weeks. Follow-up checks assess tolerability and infection status. Other sexually transmitted infections and hepatitis B vaccination may also be considered.
