Tick-borne encephalitis vaccination

Reviewing protection for tick exposure in risk areas.

Why protection matters

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a viral infection that can inflame the brain, its coverings or spinal cord. Viruses are usually transmitted by ticks. Vaccination protects against TBE, not all tick-borne illnesses such as Lyme disease.

Who may benefit

Vaccination may be appropriate for possible tick exposure in TBE risk areas, including within Germany. Location, activities and personal circumstances matter. Walking, gardening or outdoor work can be relevant.

Planning and particular considerations

A vaccination series is needed for dependable protection and later boosters may be required. We review the product, age and previous doses. An accelerated schedule may be possible for short-notice travel depending on the vaccine. Protective clothing, checking for ticks and prompt removal remain important.

Information and observation

Before vaccination, we discuss underlying conditions, medicines, allergies and previous vaccine reactions. You receive information on benefits and possible side effects. A short observation period follows. Pain or redness at the injection site and temporary general symptoms may occur; more severe or lasting symptoms should receive medical assessment.

Costs and reimbursement

Reimbursement for travel vaccinations depends on factors including the purpose of travel and your insurance. Many statutory insurers offer additional benefits, but this is not a general guarantee of coverage. We clarify the planned services and possible charges in advance. Please check coverage with your insurer in good time.

Your appointment at the practice

Bring your vaccination record and an up-to-date medication list. Mention planned travel, pregnancy or immunosuppressive treatment. The vaccination series and boosters depend on the vaccine and current recommendations.
