Tetanus vaccination

Preventing tetanus and checking vaccination status.

Why protection matters

Tetanus is caused by a bacterial toxin following entry through wounds. Even small injuries can matter. It does not spread between people, so your own protection is particularly important.

Who may benefit

Vaccination forms part of routine protection at all ages. Missing or incomplete documentation prompts review of primary vaccination or catch-up. After injury, wound type and previous vaccination also determine action.

Planning and particular considerations

Adults generally need boosters every ten years. Certain wounds may require earlier vaccination or additional passive immunisation. Have higher-risk injuries assessed promptly and bring your record. Vaccination is often combined with protection against other infections.

Information and observation

Before vaccination, we discuss underlying conditions, medicines, allergies and previous vaccine reactions. You receive information on benefits and possible side effects. A short observation period follows. Pain or redness at the injection site and temporary general symptoms may occur; more severe or lasting symptoms should receive medical assessment.

Costs and reimbursement

Medically recommended vaccinations may be covered by statutory insurance under the applicable vaccination directive. The specific indication and your insurance cover determine eligibility. Occupational vaccination may be the responsibility of occupational health services. We discuss scope and any charges in advance.

Your appointment at the practice

Bring your vaccination record and an up-to-date medication list. Mention planned travel, pregnancy or immunosuppressive treatment. The vaccination series and boosters depend on the vaccine and current recommendations.
