Pneumococcal vaccination

Discussing protection against serious pneumococcal illness.

Why protection matters

Pneumococci can cause pneumonia, meningitis and blood poisoning. Older people and those with certain underlying conditions are particularly at risk of severe illness. Vaccination targets selected bacterial types.

Who may benefit

STIKO recommends routine protection for older adults and earlier vaccination for certain risks. Heart or lung disease, immune deficiency and other health factors are considered.

Planning and particular considerations

The appropriate vaccine and dose also depend on previous pneumococcal vaccination. We review documentation and plan according to current recommendations. A previously used vaccine does not automatically mean protection is currently complete.

Information and observation

Before vaccination, we discuss underlying conditions, medicines, allergies and previous vaccine reactions. You receive information on benefits and possible side effects. A short observation period follows. Pain or redness at the injection site and temporary general symptoms may occur; more severe or lasting symptoms should receive medical assessment.

Costs and reimbursement

Medically recommended vaccinations may be covered by statutory insurance under the applicable vaccination directive. The specific indication and your insurance cover determine eligibility. Occupational vaccination may be the responsibility of occupational health services. We discuss scope and any charges in advance.

Your appointment at the practice

Bring your vaccination record and an up-to-date medication list. Mention planned travel, pregnancy or immunosuppressive treatment. The vaccination series and boosters depend on the vaccine and current recommendations.
