House dust mite allergy

Recognising allergic symptoms and reducing exposure.

Understanding the condition

House dust mite allergy is an immune reaction to components of mites, particularly their droppings. Mites live in mattresses and textiles, among other places. Symptoms can occur all year and are not simply a matter of poor cleanliness.

Common symptoms

Sneezing, a blocked or runny nose and itchy eyes are common. Some people develop cough or breathing symptoms. An association with bedrooms or particular indoor spaces may provide clues but does not alone establish the diagnosis.

Diagnosis and assessment

We discuss the pattern and whether allergy testing is useful. A positive skin or blood test must correspond with symptoms. Breathlessness or chronic cough also prompt consideration of lower airway involvement.

Treatment and ongoing care

Treatment may include reducing allergen exposure and suitable medicines. Allergen-specific immunotherapy may be considered for a confirmed allergy causing sufficient symptoms, in coordination with allergy specialists. We explain practical steps suitable for your daily life.

Monitoring your progress together

We discuss which changes to watch for in everyday life and when another check-up would be useful. Your questions, personal goals and how well you tolerate treatment inform further decisions. Where needed, we coordinate with your treating specialists.

Your appointment at the practice

Bring your health insurance card, recent medical letters, existing test results and a medication list. Note any changes in your symptoms and your main questions. Do not change existing treatment yourself; we will discuss together whether adjustments are needed.
