Acute lower back pain (lumbago)

Examining sudden lower back pain and helping you move.

Understanding the condition

Lumbago describes sudden pain in the lumbar region. A dangerous cause is often absent. Nevertheless, signs of nerve involvement, injury or another illness need to be checked.

Common symptoms

Pain may worsen considerably with movement and lead to a protective posture. Radiation, numbness and loss of strength are important details. Fever, major injury or new bladder or bowel difficulties need prompt assessment.

Diagnosis and assessment

We discuss triggers and assess movement and, where appropriate, nerve function. Immediate imaging is often unnecessary without warning signs. Further tests are used for abnormal findings or if symptoms do not improve as expected.

Treatment and ongoing care

The aim is pain relief and suitable everyday activity. Heat and individually appropriate pain medicines may help. Prolonged bed rest is usually unhelpful. We discuss return to activity and assess further support if symptoms persist.

Monitoring your progress together

We discuss which changes to watch for in everyday life and when another check-up would be useful. Your questions, personal goals and how well you tolerate treatment inform further decisions. Where needed, we coordinate with your treating specialists.

Your appointment at the practice

Bring your health insurance card, recent medical letters, existing test results and a medication list. Note any changes in your symptoms and your main questions. Do not change existing treatment yourself; we will discuss together whether adjustments are needed.
