Chronic fatigue

Careful assessment of persistent exhaustion.

Understanding the condition

Fatigue describes marked exhaustion that does not improve sufficiently with ordinary rest. It can accompany various illnesses. ME/CFS is a distinct condition and must not be equated with every form of chronic tiredness.

Common symptoms

People may report reduced capacity, concentration difficulties and unrefreshing sleep. In ME/CFS, delayed worsening after physical or mental effort, known as post-exertional malaise (PEM), is especially important.

Diagnosis and assessment

We assess onset, possible preceding infections, responses to effort and accompanying symptoms. Examination and selected tests also help identify other treatable causes. Specialist assessment is coordinated where indicated. Normal routine blood results do not rule out ME/CFS.

Treatment and ongoing care

Support depends on the cause and your activity limits. With PEM, overexertion is avoided; a blanket programme of progressively increasing physical exercise is unsuitable. We discuss symptom relief, practical adaptations and, where needed, support with the social and occupational effects of illness. Goals are agreed together.

Monitoring your progress together

We discuss which changes to watch for in everyday life and when another check-up would be useful. Your questions, personal goals and how well you tolerate treatment inform further decisions. Where needed, we coordinate with your treating specialists.

Your appointment at the practice

Bring your health insurance card, recent medical letters, existing test results and a medication list. Note any changes in your symptoms and your main questions. Do not change existing treatment yourself; we will discuss together whether adjustments are needed.
