Hashimoto's thyroiditis

Ongoing care for an autoimmune thyroid condition.

Understanding the condition

Hashimoto's thyroiditis is inflammation of the thyroid caused by the immune system. It can lead to an underactive thyroid over time. Not everyone needs medication immediately; thyroid function, symptoms and individual circumstances determine treatment.

Common symptoms

Possible signs of an underactive thyroid include tiredness, sensitivity to cold, constipation and dry skin. These symptoms have other causes too. Some people notice nothing initially and learn about the condition through blood tests or ultrasound.

Diagnosis and assessment

Assessment mainly uses TSH and, where appropriate, other thyroid measurements. Antibody tests and ultrasound can clarify the cause. We interpret results alongside symptoms, medication and circumstances such as pregnancy or plans to conceive.

Treatment and ongoing care

If an underactive thyroid needs treatment, levothyroxine can replace missing hormones. Regular checks help establish the right dose. Do not use iodine or other supplements without advice. We discuss correct use and possible interactions, including with iron or calcium supplements.

Monitoring your progress together

We discuss which changes to watch for in everyday life and when another check-up would be useful. Your questions, personal goals and how well you tolerate treatment inform further decisions. Where needed, we coordinate with your treating specialists.

Your appointment at the practice

Bring your health insurance card, recent medical letters, existing test results and a medication list. Note any changes in your symptoms and your main questions. Do not change existing treatment yourself; we will discuss together whether adjustments are needed.
