Arteriosclerosis

Identifying blood vessel changes and reducing modifiable risks.

Understanding the condition

Arteriosclerosis involves changes in artery walls. Deposits often form, narrowing vessels and restricting blood flow. It can affect the heart, brain or legs and often remains unnoticed for a long time, making risk assessment important.

Common symptoms

Symptoms depend on the affected vessels. Chest tightness during exertion or leg pain when walking can be clues. Sudden chest pain, acute breathlessness or new neurological problems indicate a possible emergency; call 112.

Diagnosis and assessment

We discuss smoking, blood pressure, blood glucose, blood lipids and family history. An examination and selected blood tests help assess risk. Concerning symptoms may require cardiology or vascular investigations.

Treatment and ongoing care

The aim is to prevent further vascular damage and complications. This includes stopping smoking, suitable exercise and a balanced diet. Blood pressure and lipids may require medication depending on overall risk. Existing blood-thinning medication is reviewed according to its specific indication.

Monitoring your progress together

We discuss which changes to watch for in everyday life and when another check-up would be useful. Your questions, personal goals and how well you tolerate treatment inform further decisions. Where needed, we coordinate with your treating specialists.

Your appointment at the practice

Bring your health insurance card, recent medical letters, existing test results and a medication list. Note any changes in your symptoms and your main questions. Do not change existing treatment yourself; we will discuss together whether adjustments are needed.
