Thyroid ultrasound

Assessing the size and structure of the thyroid.

What to expect

Ultrasound lets us examine the thyroid's size and structure. We interpret the findings alongside your medical history and any further investigations.

Seeing size and structure

Ultrasound uses sound waves to produce images of the thyroid. It can show changes in size or tissue and reveal nodules. It uses no X-rays and can usually be performed without special preparation.

Distinguishing structure from function

Gel is applied to the neck and a probe is moved over the skin. Images mainly show thyroid structure. Whether it produces too much or too little hormone is assessed using other findings, particularly laboratory tests. If abnormalities are found, we discuss follow-up checks or further assessment.

Before your appointment

Please bring existing medical reports and an up-to-date medication list. We discuss any special preparation, the exact scope and possible costs when arranging your appointment.
